FROM THE MAT UP: Justyce Zuniga

Behind every athlete is a story that goes beyond wins and losses — the personal battles, moments of doubt, and challenges that shape who they become. For Justyce Zuniga, stepping away from wrestling was not just a pause in his sport; it was a period of personal growth, faith, and self-discovery. His journey back to the mat demonstrates resilience, discipline, and what it truly means to embrace a new beginning.

For Justyce, the hardest part of being away from wrestling wasn’t missing competition. It was the personal struggles he faced that few people ever saw. Wrestling, a sport he had dedicated much of his life to, became emotionally and mentally challenging.

During that time, Justyce turned to his faith. “I found God and started walking a path I didn’t create for myself, but one He chose for me,” he reflects. Through trusting God and surrendering to His plan, Justyce made peace with whatever outcome came — whether he would wrestle again or not. This foundation of faith ultimately guided him back to the mat, stronger, more grounded, and more determined than ever.

Time away from competition gave Justyce the space to reflect on what wrestling truly meant to him. He realized that the sport, while central to his life, was not his entire identity. Instead, wrestling became part of a larger purpose, a privilege he was honored to pursue.

“The time away changed me as a person,” Justyce shares. “I had a choice to give up or keep trying and be a part of something greater. God changed my mentality, especially the way I viewed wrestling and what it meant to me.” This perspective allowed him to cultivate a healthier, more purposeful relationship with the sport.

Even when life felt out of his control, Justyce remained disciplined. Surrounded by family, coaches, and mentors who believed in him, he showed up each day and worked as if his opportunity might never come. This consistency and mental fortitude became the cornerstone of his eventual comeback.

When Justyce was finally cleared to wrestle again, the moment was filled with excitement and validation. Months of uncertainty and challenges had tested his patience and faith. Despite obstacles, he remained present in the discomfort, trusting the process and staying committed. The moment confirmed not only his readiness to compete but also his growth as an athlete and as a person.

Before this journey, Justyce wrestled primarily for himself, letting the sport define his identity. Through faith and reflection, he learned that true purpose comes from something greater than individual achievement.

“By God’s grace, I stopped myself and chose to follow the path He created for me,” he explains. Today, he wrestles not just for personal success, but for God, for his team, and for the lessons he has learned along the way.

The concept of NOVUS — meaning “new beginnings” — resonates deeply with Justyce. It represents letting go of who he thought he had to be and embracing the person God has been shaping him to become. NOVUS embodies faith, perseverance, and showing up every day ready to work, even when success is not guaranteed.

“NOVUS means God took everything from me, and through faith, discipline, and work, I was given the chance to build it back the right way,” he says. “That’s my new beginning.”
For athletes experiencing challenges outside their control, Justyce emphasizes the importance of faith and surrender. “Don’t make the mistake of choosing the path you want — it only leads to more struggles. Surrender to God and let Him carry the pressure and doubt you were never meant to hold on your own,” he advises. Justyce Zuniga’s story is a testament to perseverance, faith, and growth. His journey proves that setbacks do not define an athlete; how they respond does. From the mat up, he continues to embody the principles of NOVUS — new beginnings, hard work, and purpose-driven success.
